Should I Be Using Purple Shampoo?
It’s a question we hear a lot, and the answer may not be what you think.
First off, lets talk about what purple shampoo is and what it does. Here at AMP, the purple shampoo we recommend to guests is our Paul Mitchell Forever Blonde Platinum Shampoo. As I’m sure you have guessed, purple shampoo is… purple! A toning shampoo has purple pigment in the product that removes brassiness and unwanted tones in the hair. It’s a great tool for clients that go brassy in between their salon visits, or guests with grey that want to keep the colour nice and bright!
So, should you be using it? Good question!
Like I said, purple shampoo is a great product for some people. If you really love those cooler, ashy blonde tones and find you just can’t wait for your next salon visit, then its a great option for you. Here are some things to keep in mind when considering a toning shampoo:
Using toning shampoo isn’t going to turn you platinum blonde. It will, however, help maintain/enhance the colour your hair was when you left the salon. It can help keep those highlights looking fresh and beautiful!
If used too much, toning shampoo can leave a purple/grey tone on the hair, changing the tone you left the salon with. Depending on the strength of the shampoo and the frequency you use it, you may find that your hair is taking on some purple or grey tones. If this happens, try switching back to your regular shampoo and using the toning shampoo less to see if that helps.
More toned doesn’t equal lighter blonde. While toning shampoo can keep your blonde bright and beautiful, it’s a common misconception that the more you use it, the lighter your hair will be. In fact, if you’re over-using your toning shampoo, and your hair begins to take on more grey tones, you’ll actually find your hair looks darker than it did when you left our chair.
Frequency is important! For most people, once a week or once every other week is enough, always check with your stylist to see what they recommend.
